LUCKNOW: This one’s all set to be an unconventional exhibition. The culture department of Uttar Pradesh government will host a four-day exhibition featuring Urdu “granth” (religious texts) depicting Ram Kathas – the story of Lord Ram as told in Ramayana — from October 14 to 18 this year.

A government order, a copy of which is with TOI, was issued through the state’s web portal on July 22.

The order says it will focus on “urdu granthon mein ram katha ka chitran” (depiction of Ram Katha in Urdu religious texts). The order, issued by special secretary to the department of Culture, Ram Vishal Mishra, to director, department of culture, Anita Meshram, has also sanctioned Rs 47,000 towards making arrangements for the exhibition.

When contacted, Meshram, who is also secretary to the department of culture, confirmed that the exhibition will be held at the state archives in Allahabad and Lucknow.

Meshram said Urdu “granth” referred to all those Urdu manuscripts where Ram Kathas find mention. She said, “This exhibition is symbolic of Hindu-Muslim unity and the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb that the Awadh culture is known for. The cataloguing for the exhibition will be done soon, and we will have about 50 exhibits on display.”

In 2013, a communique of the UP government had resulted in a meeting of senior police officers and the district magistrate of Faizabad being convened to discuss the reconstruction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya on the lines of Somnath temple. The letter, issued by Satish Chandra Mishra, then secretary to the state government had instructed the DGP and other senior police officers to attend a meeting in connection with the “enactment of a law in Parliament for construction of a temple at Shri Ramjanmabhoomi on the lines of the reconstruction of Somnath Mandir”. A day later, the embarrassed government issued a rejoinder claiming a clerical error and suspended three persons for the “mistake.”
